So a few things about this weekend:
I had a great night on Saturday first at Murano which was perfect for my friend Meg and me, since it’s Italian-french fusion and VERY veggie/pescetarian-friendly. It’s also conveniently located around the corner from the Troubadour. The food was great and the atmosphere was surprisingly un-L.A., just sophisitcasual and light.
Then it was off to the Troubadour… KCRW was kind enough to whip up a little show for me on my birthday weekend and for the second time in three years on two coasts, I got to spend my birthday with the incomparable Teddy Thompson. He’s English, talented, smart, funny and VERY sarcastic. So of COURSE he could stand on-stage and merely comment on his day and I would be fascinated. But luckily, he decided to treat us to some banter here and there and play some music. We got to hear some of my favourites from Separate Ways, as well as quite a few from Up Front and Down Low (Englishmen doing traditional country classics is SO satisfying). THEN he threw in a few from his upcoming record including one we LOVED called possibly “Walk the Line” (how BRAZEN to steal a title from the man in black himself… ah Teddy).
My favourite part of his appearance this time were his shoes. My friend Meg said, “Every time I think he’s a little pretentious, I just picture him in the store trying those on”. They were white… and ENORMOUS. I know MUSIC is my boyfriend… but I think I’d like to add the requirement that music oughta be wearing those shoes when we go out if music knows what’s good for him.
It was lovely. It’s been a while since I got to see him play alone. It was just him, in the middle of the stage with his guitar under a tiny neon sign that said: “Troubadour”. Exactly.
