If you’re not here, which you’re not because I would see you reading this. You are not seeing the most remarkable show in L.A. tonight.
There’s no lead singer, no lead guitarist, no lead anything. There no DJ. There’s no light show or back-up singers or hype girls. There’s no cover tunes or radio hits. Ebu Gogo is three of the most talented musicians I’ve seen since I’ve moved here and they’re not even from here.
The bassist uses the WHOLE bass… lol (I can’t even believe I just typed that). The drummer plays progressive rhythms with impecable precision and he never reverts to the disco beat we’ve all become accustomed to hearing. The keyboardist uses both hands at the same time and was actually sweating.
I sound like someone with seriously limited musical knowledge, but the often sweet, yet dumbed-down, “self-taught” music found in the indie clubs around L.A. hardly ever surprises me with this caliber of performance. In a profound way, the seemingly simple genius and yet INSANELY complex quality of the composition of the songs and arrangements marry to form a tight, somehow familiar instrumental road-map through the part of my brain where good music lives.
The band plays again this Friday at Pehrspace and if you miss it, you’re just stupid.
